Is there an age requirement for residents?

Yes. Brandermill Woods is an active retirement community for people 62 and over.

May I decorate my home as I wish?

Yes. You may furnish and decorate your home in any way you see fit. Built-ins and major modifications will become the property of Brandermill Woods when your home is vacated. You will be responsible for returning the home to its original condition if requested.

May I have guests, host parties and travel?

Yes, certainly. Guests may visit you and enjoy all of the amenities of the Clubhouse and if you like to travel, you'll feel secure about your home and your possessions while you're away.

May I have a pet?

Pets are welcome, but are subject to Brandermill Community Association and Chesterfield County regulations and restrictions. A $700 non-refundable pet fee is required.

What Health Care Community Services are offered?

The Health Care Communities offer several levels of care from full service apartment living to skilled nursing care. The Health Care Communities include a 60-bed, fully licensed nursing home and a three-story building containing 40 assisted-living and 19 memory enhanced rental apartments. A new state-of-the-art 22-bed rehab wing was opened in the spring of 2015.

Do the Health Care Communities offer Advantages for Independent Living Residents?

Yes. Both are located on-site and only residents of Brandermill Woods have priority admittance.

What kind of transportation is available?

Many residents bring their cars with them; however, Brandermill provides scheduled transportation throughout the community. An on-campus shuttle is available throughout the day so that residents are able to attend activities or visit neighbors easily.

What precautions have been taken concerning fire, since the homes are joined by common walls?

The entire community is equipped with a state-of-the-art security system that monitors the sprinkler system, inclusive of smoke and heat detectors in each unit. In the event of a fire, an alarm notifies the security desk and the fire department will be dispatched immediately.

How far is Brandermill Woods from Richmond?

You can reach the heart of downtown Richmond in approximately 20 minutes.

Where is the nearest hospital?

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is 1 mile from Brandermill Woods.

What about soundproofing?

The homes are soundproofed, with well-insulated common walls.

What is our relationship with the larger Brandermill community?

Brandermill Woods is located in the planned community of Brandermill. Our residents can enjoy miles of walking trails throughout the wooded neighborhoods and use of the private Brandermill Country Club.

Do you have an emergency action plan?

We have a written emergency plan that is reviewed and tested every year. Our plan addresses the following types of emergencies:

Weather emergencies such as tornadoes, hurricanes and winter weather
Security incidents such as bomb threats, terrorism and active shooters
Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods

All staff are trained on emergency procedures. They participate in drills and exercises to test their knowledge. Residents are asked to take part in all drills so they can know what to expect in an actual emergency. Our emergency plan includes procedures for communication.

Assisted Living is designed for individuals who require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management, bathing, dressing and toileting.

Who licenses the assisted living?

In the state of Virginia, Assisted Living facilities are licensed by the Department of Social Services.

What is provided?

Room and Board, meals, snacks and nourishment, medication administration and monitoring, assistance with Activities of Daily Living, housekeeping, transportation, therapy, 24-hour security and a full program of social activities.

Does my health insurance (medicare & medigap) pay for assisted living?

No, health insurance does not cover the costs of Assisted Living. However, certain health services (therapy, physician services, durable medical equipment) are billed to medical insurance if applicable. Brandermill Woods will also assist in billing an individual’s Long-Term Care insurance if applicable.

What is the difference between the Chesterfield and the Holly Inn?

Both are licensed to operate as an Assisted Living facility. However, The Holly Inn is a secure unit designed for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Does Assisted Living offer different types of floor plans?

All of our apartments are private and we offer four different floorplans to choose from.

Who owns the assisted living and how long has it been in operation?

Senior Living Choices, Inc, a non-profit corporation in the Commonwealth of Virginia, does business as Brandermill Woods. The Chesterfield has been in operation for 34 years.

Are the apartments furnished?

No, residents bring their own furniture and may decorate as they wish.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, pets under 40 lbs. are permitted. There is a one-time, non-refundable pet fee of $700. Residents are expected to safely and properly take care of their pet.

Are Couples Allowed To Share Apartment?

Yes, couples may share either the Alcove or One Bedroom apartments. The cost for double occupancy is the rate of the resident with the highest level of care multiplied by 1.5.

What is an assisted living – memory care unit?

Assisted living is designed for individuals WHO require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation. Some residents may have memory disorders including alzheimer's, or they may need help with mobility, incontinence or other challenges.

The holly inn has the additional benefit of providing a secure environment to accommodate those individuals with safety awareness issues through our wander guard system. Our highly trained staff offer an environment that strives to ensure our residents remain at their highest level of function.

Is the staffing different in the holly inn?

Yes, not only is the staff to resident ratio higher than in a traditional assisted living setting, but all staff members a specifically trained to work with the memory impaired.

How are meals served?

All meals, snacks, and beverages are served family style. While breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at general times, we try to respect and support the lifestyles our residents have practiced all their lives. Late risers and early risers may not necessarily eat breakfast together. Lunch and dinner are usually served during a general time frame.

Residents that require placement in memory care have gone through an extensive assessment by their physician and brandermill woods staff to provide the documentation needed for this home like but structured setting. We will work very closely with the family members to ensure there is a clear understanding of our environment and its suitability for their loved ones.

What is the haven?

The haven offers the highest level of care for older adults. This includes 24-hour room and board and health care services, including transferring in and out of bed, and providing assistance with feeding, bathing, and dressing.

Does insurance cover the costs of the haven?

Long-term custodial care is not covered by medicare, medigap or commercial insurance unless an individual has had a qualifying hospital stay (at least three nights) and qualifies for skilled nursing care. An individual qualifies for up to 100 days in their snf benefit period, however most residents don’t use the full benefit period. After 20 days in a snf, an individual is responsible for the daily medicare co-payment if their medigap insurance doesn’t cover the costs. Brandermill woods will also assist in billing an individual's long-term care health insurance if applicable.

Who licenses the haven?

Nursing homes and skilled nursing homes are licensed by the department of health.

What types of living arrangements are available?

Brandermill woods has both semi-private and private rooms.

Are the rooms furnished?

All resident rooms come furnished with a hospital bed, dresser, nightstand, wardrobe closet, chair and flat screen television.

Does brandermill woods provide hospice?

Brandermill woods is contracted with a variety of companies that provide hospice services.

Is there a physician on site?

Brandermill woods typically has a physician or nurse practitioner on site Monday through Friday. A physician is on call during the night and weekend hours.

Who is eligible for homecare?

We serve older adults in Central Virginia with private Homecare. We started with the idea of serving Brandermill Woods residents such as those in Independent Living homes who may need short-term recovery, but we quickly recognized a strong demand for in-home care on- and off-campus. We are here for everyone within the surrounding Richmond area.

What homecare services do you provide?

As a continuum of care community, we aim to provide as many homecare services as possible in your home. These services range from household help such as running errands, to personal care such as medication management or assistance with daily tasks. Thanks to our campus team’s capabilities, we are also able to offer specialized services including memory and hospice support.

What are the benefits of in-home care?

Research shows people age more successfully and recover faster if they can receive care at home. Whether you are recovering from injury, illness or a brief hospital stay, or you find you need regular or occasional care, Brandermill Woods Homecare is an ideal way to take advantage of our continuum of care without having to move into an unfamiliar environment.

Who are your caregivers?

Our Homecare team is staffed by Brandermill Woods. Our team includes caregivers who are caring, friendly, and highly trained and specialize in working with older adults. They are bonded and insured as well. We strive to match our caregivers with clients so that you can bond and enjoy the same friendly face with each visit.

How do I pay for care?
