Summertime Activities Seniors Can Enjoy in Central Virginia

Monday, July 25, 2022

When it comes to the best vacations for seniors, it truly comes down to what you’ll enjoy the most. For those who may have limited mobility or want to be close to home, considering a “holistay” (stay-at-home holiday) is the ideal option.

Fortunately for residents of Brandermill Woods, Central Virginia offers a wealth of activities in our area. Since July is National Park and Recreation Month, be sure to check out the special events taking place in area parks.

If you’re researching a late-summer “holistay,” here are just a few of Richmond’s favorite summertime activities perfect for older adults:

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden: This garden spans 82 acres and includes more than a dozen themed garden areas. A number of classes, children's activities and exhibitions take place each week. Choose from events such as “Flowers after 5” where you can stroll through the garden while enjoying live music, dining and shopping or “Wednesdays Alfresco” when the garden is open later than usual for you to enjoy a special night out. Visit their website for more information and to see the full calendar of upcoming events.

Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall: Theatre lovers are sure to enjoy this one! Organizers of the Richmond Shakespeare Festival invite you to carry your lawn chairs and picnic baskets to the back lawn of Agecroft Hall for an exciting performance and great view of the James River. The play “She Stoops to Conquer” is an 18th-century comedy full of big costumes, big hair, and even bigger laughs and runs until July 31. Tickets can be purchased on https://www.agecrofthall.org/richmond-shakespeare-festival.

The Festival of the Arts at Dogwood Dell: The Festival of Arts has been described as one of Richmond’s cultural treasures. At the ‘Dell’, you can enjoy a variety of shows including classical music and dance; drama, comedy, and musical theatre; reggae, pop, swing, rhythm and blues, rock, jazz and contemporary music concerts. Choose a seat at the amphitheater or enjoy from the comfort of your blanket at the surrounding park. View this year’s schedule of events here.

Book a tour of RVA: Basket & Bike and RVA on Wheels are working together to offer a number of tours throughout Richmond. Whether you go for the trolley or bike, take advantage of sightseeing while learning all about Richmond’s landmarks, riverfront, architecture and history.
