Funding Your Retirement

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

After a lifetime of work and savings, you deserve to enjoy the retirement you’ve always dreamed of. Here at Brandermill Woods, we believe retirement should be about doing the things you want to do rather than the things you have to do: dinner out with friends rather than doing the dishes at home, sipping a glass of sweet tea rather than mowing the lawn, or taking up a new hobby rather than dealing with yet another home maintenance problem.

Brandermill Woods has made that lifestyle a reality, but, you may be asking, can you really afford it?

We often meet retirees who love the idea of moving into a retirement community but are skeptical of how much it costs. The monthly fee may seem like a lot, and they wonder if the lifestyle is worth it. After all, their mortgage may be paid off, and they know how to make ends meet where they are. Why not wait and see?

The Cost of Retirement Living

Continuing care retirement communities (CCRC) offer various levels of care which allow the resident to remain in the community should their needs increase.

Brandermill Woods is a rental of fee-for-service community meaning our residents

Pay a one-time non-refundable community fee of $4,500.00, sign a 12-month lease and then pay a monthly service fee that varies based on the size and type of cottage or apartment they choose. This fee covers a suite of community services, ranging from our many amenities (such as the fitness center, social activities, and dining rooms), preventative wellness services, housekeeping, transportation, a monthly meal plan, community maintenance fees and more. By not requiring the large upfront fee, our resident have more autonomy over their assets. Monthly service fees are listed on our website on the floor plan sections of our independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled care facilities.

Apples to Apples Comparison

When you break down the costs of what you enjoy at Brandermill Woods and compare them to the costs of staying where you are, you’ll find our retirement community is more affordable than you think. For instance, your mortgage may be paid off, but you still have a number of monthly expenses that will be covered at Brandermill Woods, including:

  • Community association fees
  • Property taxes and insurance
  • Utilities and cable TV
  • Lawn and garden maintenance
  • Housekeeping
  • Home repairs (plumbing, HVAC, electricity, roofs, painting)
  • Fitness center or gym fees
  • Country club memberships
  • And more

Once you compile all expenses, you’ll see that a retirement community makes good sense. More importantly, there is a very real opportunity cost of doing nothing. Residents at Brandermill Woods enjoy more free time, the freedom to travel without worry on-site health care professionals, neighborhood friends of similar age and interest, and general peace of mind. Those intangible benefits are the real reason residents choose Brandermill Woods—and why they inevitably say, once they’re here, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Planning Ahead to Secure Your Future

One question we often hear is, “What happens if I run out of money?” We strongly recommend you work with a financial planner who can review your finances and make the right recommendation.

For unexpected events beyond your control, we recommend working with your family and your financial planner and make decisions such as downsizing your apartment. Our highest priority from the beginning is to help you plan ahead so you can rest easy and enjoy your retirement.
