7 Ways to Stay Healthier, Keep Moving this Winter

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

It’s time for crisp fall mornings, warmer jackets and the need to switch the thermostat over to heat. Plan now to stay active and healthy in the winter months.

Here at Brandermill Woods, we promote an active lifestyle, which doesn’t stop in the winter. The days are getting shorter, but that doesn't mean you have to stay in and stop moving.

Try these seven tips for a healthier and more active winter:

  • Get as much natural sunlight as possible.
Schedule a walk with a friend on a regular basis. Better yet, start a walking club with some friends. Enjoy some brunch together after your morning jaunt.

  • Be mindful of your diet.
While you’re brunching, add some spinach to that omelet. Winter and the holidays are tempting times to load up on comfort foods. But keep a watch on what you’re eating, and eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

  • Take preventive action.
Be sure to get your flu shot and keep up with regular wellness visits to head off illness before it starts.

  • Dress for the season.
Wearing layers can help you regulate your body temperature as you move from cozy living rooms to cold outdoors to drafty spaces. And don’t forget your footwear. If it’s wet out, be sure to wear some waterproof boots.

  • Find creative ways to spend time outdoors.
Winter is a great time to clean out the garden. Add some color outside your door with pansies and winter crops like cabbage. Set up an easel and do some painting outside on a nice day.

  • Find creative ways to spend time indoors.
Indoor activity can be fun and healthy. Take up swimming, go to the mall to walk or try a dance or yoga class .

  • Spend time with loved ones.
Winter can feel like a good time to hibernate, but we all need the company of people we enjoy. Take in a show, eat a meal together, reminisce about the past and plan for the future.
